Tom joined Third Republic in 2017 when we were just 2 years into our mission to transform the recruitment sector. During his time at Third Republic he has been promoted 3 times, most recently to Practice Lead. At just 22 years old he manages a team of 6 specialist consultants who recruit top technical talent across Europe. 

The guidance and mentorship that is provided to help everyone reach their full potential is also something you rarely see in other agencies.

Describe an average day at Third Republic

There are no two days the same at Third Republic. This is what makes the job so exciting. As a young company, there are loads of things that we are constantly pushing, testing and measuring. We’re always looking for ways that we can make an impact and improve the recruitment industry. We’re definitely not your standard recruitment agency.

What is it about recruitment that you enjoy the most?

I really enjoy working with and speaking to a range of different people. I speak with people at all levels, from junior candidates starting out their careers in tech to senior partners at huge global companies. At just 22 I’m advising these people on their talent acquisition strategies, helping to change their businesses as well as their opinions on the recruitment industry.

What is the best thing about working at Third Republic?

Definitely being able to share knowledge and experiences with my colleagues. Everyone here at Third Republic is like-minded and intrinsically motivated. Everyone has an eagerness to learn and help one another. There is definitely more of a team culture at Third Republic in comparison to previous companies I have worked for. We have an amazing internal peer-to-peer support mechanism here, making it a pleasure to come into work every day.

What is the most interesting part of your job?

Since I am now Practice Lead of the German team, I am really enjoying finding individuals' strengths, personalities and challenges. I manage 6 people and I’d definitely say that the best part of my job is helping the people in my team reach their full potential and watching them grow. I also find it really interesting working in the German market as opposed to the UK.

What are the challenges of your job?

Definitely the most challenging thing about a career in recruitment is that not everything goes to plan all the time. Working in recruitment takes a certain mentality and resilience. If something doesn’t go to plan, you need to be able to pick yourself up quite quickly and learn from your mistakes. Sharing this mindset, particularly with those new to recruitment is key.

How does this role differ from ones you’ve had in the past?

The opportunity to fast-track your career at Third Republic is second-to-none. I joined Third Republic in 2017 and since then I have been promoted 3 times. I’m now Practice Lead of the German team and am responsible for managing 6 people at just 22 years old. It’s really refreshing how much trust the senior leadership team has in the consultants here. The guidance and mentorship that is provided to help everyone reach their full potential is also something you rarely see in other agencies.

What is your proudest moment or biggest achievement so far?

My proudest moment to date is my recent promotion to Practice Lead of the German team. Being given this opportunity at just 22 is a real privilege. One of my biggest recruitment achievements was last year when I made my record number of placements and took home £10k in commission after tax.
